What does this Genesis quiz cover?

The questions run in the order of the book, so taking the quiz is like a quick walk through all 50 chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 cover the days of creation, the forming of the man and the command about the tree. Two questions touch Noah, then the quiz follows the family line: Abram becomes Abraham, Sarah laughs at the promise of a son, Isaac marries Rebekah, Jacob gets Esau's birthright and dreams at Bethel, and Joseph goes from a favored son to the man who explains Pharaoh's dreams.

Noah gets only two questions here because the flood has its own quiz. For a fuller tour of the patriarchs, read the story of Abraham and the life of Joseph.

How can I use the Genesis quiz with a class or at home?

Genesis works well as a family or Sunday school quiz because its stories are well known and easy to picture. Read a question aloud, let everyone guess, then read the verse together. Ask what happened just before or after: who sold Joseph, where Jacob was going when he dreamed, why Esau gave up his birthright.

If your group is reading through Genesis over several weeks, use the quiz twice: once at the start to see what people already know, and again at the end. The questions on chapters 1 to 11 suit a first session, and the rest fit later sessions on the patriarchs.

What is a good way to study Genesis before taking the quiz?

Think of Genesis in two parts: chapters 1 to 11 tell of beginnings (creation, the first family, the flood, Babel), and chapters 12 to 50 follow one family across four generations: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. If you can name who leads each generation and one event from each, you will get most of these questions right.

Notice name changes too. Abram becomes Abraham in chapter 17 and Jacob becomes Israel in chapter 32, and the place Luz is renamed Bethel. The Genesis summary and outline lists the main sections chapter by chapter.

    Answer: B. Sarah

Sarah was listening at the tent entrance and laughed, since she and Abraham were already old.

“Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife Sarah will have a son!” Now Sarah was behind him, listening at the entrance to the tent. And Abraham and Sarah were already old and well along in years; Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. • Goats from the flock
    • Silver and gold
    Show answer

Answer: A. Bread and lentil stew

Esau swore and sold his birthright, and Jacob gave him bread and lentil stew; wild game is what Esau later hunts for Isaac.

““Swear to me first,” Jacob said. So Esau swore to Jacob and sold him the birthright. Then Jacob gave some bread and lentil stew to Esau, who ate and drank and then got up and went away. Thus Esau despised his birthright.”

Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons and made him a robe of many colors; the silver cup appears later, in Joseph's own story in Egypt.

“Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons, because Joseph had been born to him in his old age; so he made him a robe of many colors.”

    • The sun and moon
    • Eleven stars
    • His brothers' sheaves
    • Seven fat cows
    Show answer

    Answer: C. His brothers' sheaves

His brothers' sheaves gathered around and bowed to his sheaf; the sun, moon and eleven stars come in his second dream.

“We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, and suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around and bowed down to mine.” “Do you intend to reign over us?” his brothers asked. “Will you actually rule us?” So they hated him even more because of his dream and his statements. Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Look,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.””

Answer: D. Seven years of famine

Joseph told Pharaoh that seven years of famine would follow and devastate the land.

“Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout the land of Egypt, but seven years of famine will follow them. Then all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten, and the famine will devastate the land.”
