What is the biblical definition of faith?
Faith in the Bible is trust in God and in what God has promised, shown by relying on God and acting on that trust. It is confidence in a person, not a leap in the dark.

Books where these words appear in the most verses: Psalms (81), John (72), Romans (46), Acts (41), Hebrews (38).
In Greek, the noun for faith and the verb for believe share one root, so faith and believe often describe the same thing. Faithful and faithfulness usually describe reliability, very often God's own, rather than a person's act of trusting.

How does the Bible use faith?
What does Hebrews 11:1 mean by faith?
Hebrews 11:1 joins faith to things hoped for and things not seen. Faith treats God's promises as solid ground before they are fulfilled. That is why it sits so close to hope.
The rest of the chapter is a list of people, not a theory. Abraham went out without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8). Noah built an ark. In Hebrews 11, faith is trust that keeps moving over a lifetime, often without seeing the end.
How does the Old Testament speak of faith?
The English word faith is rare in the Old Testament, but the idea is everywhere in words like trust and believe. Genesis 15:6 says Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness. Paul builds much of Romans 4 on that one verse.
Habakkuk 2:4 says the righteous will live by faith, or by faithfulness. Paul quotes it in Romans 1:17. The Hebrew root behind faithfulness is the same root behind the word amen: something firm that can bear weight.
Is faith the same as belief?
They overlap, but faith is wider. John's Gospel never uses the noun faith. It uses the verb believe again and again, and John 20:31 says the book was written so readers may believe. Believing there includes accepting facts about Jesus, but it centers on trusting him.
The Bible allows faith and doubt to live side by side. In Mark 9:24 a father says he believes and asks for help with his unbelief, and Jesus heals his son.
Does faith leave room for works?
Ephesians 2:8 says people are saved by grace through faith, not by works. James 2:17 says faith without action is dead. The two passages answer different problems: one rules out earning, the other rules out empty talk. Galatians 5:6 holds them together in faith expressed through love.

What are the Hebrew and Greek words behind it?
Hebrew: emunah — faithfulness, steadiness
From the same root as amen. It describes something firm and dependable.
Greek: pistis — faith, trust, faithfulness
The New Testament's main noun. Context decides whether it means trust or reliability.
Greek: pisteuō — to believe, to trust
The verb form, especially common in John's Gospel.
Faith vs hope: what is the difference?
Hope looks ahead to what God has promised. Faith trusts the God who made the promise, here and now. Hebrews 11:1 links them closely, while 1 Corinthians 13:13 lists them separately along with love.
Why does faith matter?
Faith is the Bible's word for how people receive what God offers. From Abram to the early church, the response God looks for is trust. That is why faith appears in so many key texts about being made right with God.
Faith also corrects a common myth: that it means believing without evidence. Biblical faith rests on what God has already done, like the exodus or the resurrection. It is one of the core entries in the 7 Scrolls Bible Dictionary.
How do Christian traditions understand faith?
- Many Protestant readers: Teach that people are justified by faith alone, apart from works. Good works follow as the fruit of real faith.
- Catholic teaching: Sees faith as a gift of grace that must be living and active. It often cites Galatians 5:6, faith working through love, and holds that faith and works are not opposed.
- Orthodox Christians: Describe faith as living trust in God, lived out in prayer, worship and love within the church. Faith and works are seen as one path of growing union with God.
