What Does Righteousness Mean in the Bible?

In the Bible, righteousness has two sides: being in the right with God and doing right by other people. The Hebrew word tsedaqah often stands beside justice, and the Greek dikaiosynē is central to Paul's letter to the Romans. Righteousness is about relationships kept faithfully, not only about following rules.

What is the biblical definition of righteousness?

Righteousness is being right with God and doing what is right toward others. In the Bible it describes God's own faithfulness and fairness, a right standing God gives, and a way of life that matches it.

How does the Bible use righteousness?

What does righteousness mean in the Old Testament?

The Hebrew words tsedeq and tsedaqah describe what is right within a relationship. A righteous judge is fair, a righteous king protects the weak, and a righteous person keeps faith with neighbors. Deuteronomy 24:13 even calls returning a poor man's cloak by sunset an act credited as righteousness.

The prophets often pair righteousness with justice. Amos 5:24 asks for both to flow like a river. Psalm 11:7 says the LORD is righteous and loves justice. In these texts righteousness is something you can see in how people are treated.

How does Paul use righteousness in Romans?

Romans is the letter where the word does the most work. Romans 1:17 says the gospel reveals the righteousness of God by faith. Romans 3:10 then quotes the Psalms to say no one is righteous. Romans 3:21–22 announces a righteousness from God that comes through faith in Jesus, to all who believe.

Paul's example is Abraham. Romans 4:3 quotes Genesis 15:6: Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. To be justified, in Paul's language, is to be declared in the right before God. Scholars debate whether the righteousness of God means God's own faithfulness, a status God gives, or both.

Is righteousness about being right or doing right?

The Bible holds both together. In Matthew 6:33 Jesus tells his listeners to seek first the kingdom of God and God's righteousness. In Matthew 5:20 he says their righteousness must go beyond that of the scribes and Pharisees, which points to the heart and not only outward acts.

2 Corinthians 5:21 speaks of people becoming the righteousness of God in Christ. Right standing and right living are linked, the way salvation is linked to a changed life.

What are the Hebrew and Greek words behind it?

Hebrew: tsedeq / tsedaqah — righteousness, rightness

Faithful, fair conduct within a relationship. Often paired with mishpat, justice.

Greek: dikaiosynē — righteousness, justice

One Greek word that English splits into two. Paul uses it often in Romans.

Greek: dikaioō — to justify, to declare righteous

The verb behind justified. It comes from the same root as righteous.

Righteousness vs justice: what is the difference?

Justice usually means fair judgment and setting wrongs right. Righteousness is wider: it describes a whole life and relationship that is right. The Hebrew Bible pairs mishpat and tsedaqah so often that they work almost as one idea, as in Amos 5:24.

Why does righteousness matter?

Righteousness answers one of the Bible's oldest questions: how can people stand before a holy God? The answer runs from Abram's trust to Paul's letters, which is why the word appears at so many turning points.

It also keeps faith from becoming private. The prophets judged righteousness by how widows, orphans and the poor were treated. For more words that shape this theme, see our glossary of biblical terms.

How do Jewish and Christian traditions understand righteousness?

  • Many Protestant readers: Emphasize that God credits, or imputes, Christ's righteousness to those who believe. Right standing is a gift declared by God, and a changed life follows.
  • Catholic teaching: Understands justification as God both forgiving and truly making a person righteous within. Grace is poured into the heart and grows through a life of faith and love.
  • Jewish readers: Read tsedeq and tsedaqah mainly as right action toward God and neighbor. In later Jewish usage tzedakah also became the ordinary word for charitable giving.
